A Name By Any Other Name...

I thought it was hilarious when Quinn started calling Alex by his name, rather than "Daddy." He started doing it sporadically and then it became more common. One time he was running to tell Alex something and yelled, "Daddy—I mean, Alex!"

I just about died laughing.

But it's not funny anymore now that he calls me by my first name all the time. And Sam has picked up on it too. Jack still seems to realize I'm his mom, but he doesn't tend to use people's names very often. Usually he'll walk up to me and say, "You're my mother."

It now seems instinctual for Sam and Quinn to call us by our first names. They say "Mom" or "Dad" maybe one out of thirty times. It's cute, but it makes me a little sad too.

I'm hoping it's a phase.

  1. I know they haven't been watching the Simpsons so they haven't gotten it from Bart. Do you call each other by first names when you are around they boys? However, I'm sure it's a phase. Funny, though. Y.M.

  2. If I don't answer to "mom" the first few times they call me, then they call me Kelly in an exasperated tone! LOL

  3. Yeah it's cute, but I nipped that one in the bud right away. I'm sorry, who are you talking to? I did it in a humorous way and I think after a while they got tired of getting no results when they called me by my name. It's a phase I'm sure.

  4. Bub has just recently figured out that "Mama" and "Daddy" aren't actually our names. He has called me by name before, using the nickname that hubby most often addresses me by, but when asked what my name is, he invariably replies using my full name. In fact, he'll flatly deny that the nickname is my name at all. I think he believes it's a phrase meaning, "Come here."

  5. Oh I don't know that. At least they'll never be caught out when they have to explain who mum and dad are.
    Cheers

  6. Awww...that's bittersweet! Thanks for the bday wishes to Nik. BTW, I was posting a short (15 second) video when you stopped by. Don't know if you saw it. Nik's first train ride...LOL

  7. We nipped that one. Joey was learning our names and thought it was cool, but we gently reminded him that we are still Mom and Daddy.

  8. My 3 year old has taken to doing that. I can't help but giggle a little.

  9. It's got to be a phase. Maybe they're also seeing your (dismayed) reaction and are making it a game? Hmmm... If anything, my boys would call me "Babe" and their dad "Hey" if they're paying any attention at all :) I don't think we ever call each other by our real names.

  10. Ha! Cannot name the number of times I've heard my husband say, "It's Daddy to you!"

    They just run off giggling.

  11. I have a gf who's entire family, children, grandchildren, etc, all call her "Honey" because that's what her first husband called her in front of the kids. Now it's just a thing. But at least it's a cute thing. I'm not sure that a 5 year old saying "That's my mother, Stella." is as cute. ;-)

  12. Yep it is just a phase. My kids went thru it when the 2 oldest went through pre-k. They were taught our names in case anything happened and another adult needed to know our names. It will pass. = )

  13. Maria does it to me sometimes, it sounds so funny and strange. We had neighbors growing up who called their parents by their first names only and now Peter, that's the neighbor, 's kids call him and his wife by their first names. It's so, so weird to me, as I am 43 years old and still call my mother mommy. :)
