Fabulous Fourth

My tweet from this morning: Love the 4th! Parties, friends, fireflies, and fireworks. And rain. Probably rain. In which case: Love the 4th! Alex is off of work!

Every part of that came true today. For someone (me) who is not very classically patriotic (but who does really appreciate that she lives in the U.S.), I sure do enjoy the 4th of July.

Let's look at that update from Twitter again. First of all, Alex was off of work. Check.

Parties and friends go together. And we had plenty of both. First came an excellent lunch BBQ with WhyMommy, her family, and another MOMS Club friend and family. Relaxed laughter, friendly kids, delicious food, and a begging dog made for a terrific afternoon.

Then some quiet time before we were off to our evening BBQ. We were a little worried about what the rain (check) would do to that party, held by my neighbors every year. But not to worry, my neighbors are a hearty bunch, undeterred by things like rain on the night of an outdoor party.

Then Friend H and her family took advantage of the fact that my driveway is situated on a street so close to where our fireworks are set off that the road is closed on the 4th. They also braved the rain to park there and walk over to the party to hang out with us and stand under trees as the rain got steadily heavier.

And good timing too. Their arrival made Sam forget entirely that moments earlier he had been "sooo bored" and had a headache and was suffering from the ennui that only a six-year-old boy in a neighborhood of eight-year-old and older girls can understand.

Fortunately the rain stopped just in time for us to walk up to the neighborhood soccer field and watch the fireworks. No one was scared this year. (Well, not in my family. Friend H may have something to say about that.) In fact, my family was nothing but delighted. So, fireworks...

What else? Oh, right. Fireflies.

  1. Sounds like it was a wonderful day!

  2. And a wonderful time was had by all. Yay!

  3. Oh, the fireflies are beautiful. They were all up in mom's cedar trees while we were waiting between fireworks. The whole night seemed to glitter. Lovely.

  4. Sounds like you had a better 4th then we did! What a great way to celebrate!
